ICS Discussion Group Meeting Monday 31 March 11am Hotel Salobreña Suites – Views on Education

Hello Debaters,

This is the invitation to our next discussion on  Monday, 31.03.2025 at 11:00 – at Hotel Salobrena

For this week we decided to have a topic not related to daily politics.

The proposed topic is

Views on Education

Below you find a list of questions touching different aspects of education.

  • Is the education our children receive a good preparation for the present/future workforce?
  • What types of workforce qualification should be anticipated.
  • What qualifications are needed to flexibly switch jobs, as new technologie create new jobs looking for workforce?
  • Is there a need for a ministry of education?
  • Is the IQ test a valid way to measure children’s aptitude or does it only check the child’s ability to cope with traditional learning?
  • In this age of texting, should it be acceptable to have simplified spelling? Is correct spelling even necessary outside the more academic jobs?
  • Does our over protective nanny state impede the full development of children’s potential?
  • Is there really such a surge in autism and attention deficit disorder or are these labels being applied to children whose early years development has been deficient or to those who have been allowed to do what they wish with no rules being laid down?
  • The training of many children has shifted from parents to teachers. Lack of accountability from parents?
  • At least in Britain there is a sense that people with a degree are superior to trades folk. How can we redress the balance so that youngsters don’t feel the pressure to continue studying when they are better suited to manual work?
  • Is it necessary for disinterested children to stay at school until 16? Can we not offer alternative training from an earlier age?

Feel free to add more of such question during the debate.
Check if you agree with the implications of a question.

Looking forward to seeing you on Monday

Matthias
